Lithia
is an unincorporated community that continues to expand with every
passing year. Originally Lithia was founded in 1847 when James and
Roxanna Alderman forded the Alafia River and settled in the beautiful
wilderness that would later become known as Lithia. The original
name given to the area was Pelot, after the Pelot cemetery where
Alderman's wife and son were buried. Pelot continued to grow with
the arrival of the Seaboard Air Line Railroad. The name Lithia originated
in 1900 from the discovery of high amounts of Lithium in a small
spring
located on a local property. At this point, Lithia was strictly
agricultural developments specializing in citrus, strawberries,
sugar cane and peas among other crops. During the 1920s present-day
Lithia-Pinecrest Road was paved, which made the trip to Brandon
easier. From the 1930s through the 1980s, Lithia continued to be
an agrarian community although many of the farms were beginning
to diminish in the late 60's, Lithia continued to gain popularity
with families seeking rural life close to the big city. Lithia today
still retains many of the relaxed, rural characteristics that existed
upon the community's foundation, yet still continues to grow.
Location is an important appealing factor associated with Lithia.
Because of Lithia-Pinecrest Road, easy access is granted to the
interstate systems making the trip to Tampa, MacDill Air Force Base,
Lakeland and Orlando easier and more convenient for the perpetual
commuter. Residents of Lithia are also granted access to several
options for education. Highly rated public and private schools are
within minutes of the area. Different teaching methods and curriculums
are available to help children achieve the best education possible.
There are also several colleges nearby, including University of
South Florida and the University of Tampa. The commute to college
becomes simpler and less stressful with Lithia's prime location.
Several restaurants and stores have also begun to open in the area.
Casual and formal dining is available as well as pharmacies, convenience
stores, grocery stores and department stores. Lithia residents also
have easy access to the Brandon mall, which continues to grow and
change to cater to the needs of the consumers. Also located in Brandon,
a mere minutes away from Lithia, are the movie theaters, additional
options for casual and semi-formal dining, and many other choices
for how to spend free time.
In addition to the man-made attractions that provide entertainment
and relaxation, there is still natural beauty and wonders that are
no longer found in many other areas. Lithia Springs is a public
park that provides a relaxing way to spend an afternoon or a weekend.
More than just a local "swimming hole," Lithia Springs attracts
many for its Aquifer, which supports the passing of over 24 million
gallons of water every day. The water in Lithia Springs originates
from a fault in the limestone a mere ten feet from the surface of
the water. Because the fault reaches deeper under the surface of
the ground, the water that fills the springs has an unusually cool
temperature, usually ranging from 68 to 72 degrees. On the hottest
days of summer, Lithia Springs is guaranteed to be one of the coolest
places around! At Lithia Springs, people can find relaxation in
observing the diverse wildlife that lives undisturbed, canoeing,
rafting, swimming and camping! Lithia Springs presents an amazing
and unique activity which appeals to many people from all over the
state.
Lithia is a community unlike any other, the serene natural elements
combine with the comforts of a big city to create an atmosphere
that more and more people are choosing over other options. For more
