Tampa is one of the oldest areas within Tampa's city limits. West
Tampa originally existed as an independent city, but over the years
has become a community within Tampa again. Founded in 1892 by Scottish
immigrants, West Tampa was originally designed to attract cigar
makers and have that industry become the main export of the area.
Three years later, West Tampa became a city independent of Tampa
with the second largest population in the state. This area has been
one of the most quickly developing areas in Florida, and continues
to
be one of the most sought after living environments. During the
early 1900s, West Tampa was the top cigar-making city in the country,
along with Ybor City, and had more residents than the city of Tallahassee.
In 1925, West Tampa was reabsorbed into Tampa and became classified
as a community.
